We've updated our car reliability stats for the XJ to include owner experiences through December 31, 2012.

The repair frequency for the 2004 XJ, 168 repairs per 100 cars per year, remains high. This stat is based on a small sample size, though, so it's not precise.

Thank you, once again, everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May and August. The more owners participate, the more comprehensive and precise these will be.

An owner of a 2006 XJ recently joined, and was disappointed that we had stats only for the 2004.

I'd really like to cover more years, especially since the 2004 was the first year and likely not representative of the others.

We are only two cars short of the minimum with the 2005.

We've updated our reliability stats for the XJ to include owner experiences through March 31, 2013.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2004 XJ: 164, high, very small sample size

We'll have further updates in August and in November, which will add the 2005. I'd love to have precise stats for each of the past 15 model years--need more people involved.

We've updated our reliability stats for the XJ to include owner experiences through June 30, 2014 (making them about 14 months ahead of some others).

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2005 XJ: 143, high, very small sample size
2004 XJ: 67, low, very small sample size

The small sample sizes likely explain the large difference between these results. We very much need more participants for these cars.

We've updated our reliability stats for the XJ to include owner experiences through September 30, 2014.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2005 XJ: 158, high, very small sample size
2004 XJ: 102, moderate, very small sample size

Additional participants would certainly be helpful, to improve the precision of these stats and cover additional model years.

We've updated our reliability stats for the XJ to include owner experiences through the end of 2014. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2005 XJ: 177, high, very small sample size
2004 XJ: 115, high, very small sample size

We'll have further updates in May and in August. Additional participants would be very helpful--I'd like to drop those sample size notes and cover more model years.

mkaresh,

I have an account that I deleted my 2005 S-Type because I sold it, but the website wouldn't let me add my 2006 XJ8L for some reason.

So, how have these cars been doing lately?

Our reliability stats for the XJ now include owner experiences through March 31, 2015. (Others are nearly a year behind.)

In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year ("low" is best):

2005 XJ: 99, moderate, very small sample size
2004 XJ: 81, moderate, very small sample size

No stat for a model year? Then we very much need more participants for it. Same for those with small sample sizes--all the rest. Next updates in August and November.

Our reliability stats for the XJ now cover the year ending June 30, 2015. Repair trips per 100 cars:

2004 XJ: 108, moderate, very small sample size

More participants needed to properly cover these cars. We ended up a couple responses short for the 2005.

(Yes, we remain short on participants to adequately cover the XJ.)

We've updated our reliability stats for the XJ to include owner experiences through the end of 2015, about eight months ahead of other sources. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year--lower is better:

2004 XJ: 128, high, small sample size

To point out the obvious: more participants are needed to properly cover these cars.

I found it interesting that the following information was listed for a 2006 XJ;

"With the supercharged 510hp 5.0L V8 engine, 8-speed shiftable automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive, the 2006 Jaguar XJ has been averaging 19.57 MPG (miles per gallon). The 2006 Jaguar XJs in this analysis were driven mostly on the highway at an average speed of 67 miles per hour (about 61.7 percent of the miles driven). The rest of the miles were in the city (20 percent), in heavy traffic (5 percent), and in the suburbs (0 percent). In addition, the average 2006 Jaguar XJ in this analysis was driven on flat terrain with a medium foot and the AC on only some of the time."

I didn't know there was a 510 Hp option in 2006, but my 400 Hp 2006 SV8 averages about 24 MPG in mixed driving and can get up to 27 MPG on the highway in US gallons with a relative modest driving style. I suppose in Sport mode and with a heavy foot it could be considerably less, but 24 seems a reasonable economy for what this car offers in comfort and performance.

One comment on soliciting reliability information from members of a web site like this is that many of us come here seeking solutions to problems we encounter (and a darn good site it is for that) so repair experiences may be skewed to the high side VS folks who never seek out an enthusiasts web site and just drive blissfully about.

1st This must be from another planet that offered a 5.0, 510Hp motor. I want one!!!
The comments, Driving on flat terain, with a medium foot, relative modest driving style, average speed of 67 miles per hour simply don't exist with a super V8. What fun is that? They are not talking about any of us!!!
