I was taking off my car cover after a storm and heard a noise, it was the leaper falling off the hood! The cable holding into the spring had rusted through and fallen apart. It might be a good idea to have a look at yours to save the loss of a $200 item. I repaired it by using a piece of bicycle brake cable and a new aluminum crush sleeve from the hardware store. You will need a long 24mm socket to remove the assembly.

 

Mine came off while waxing for a car show, I used a plastic wire tie for the wire. Wire rusted through right at the crimp.
