Well White-Allen Jaguar is out. They only have one tech and he is only there 20 hours per week....sheesh

That's the other reason I lean toward the flexplate possibility.

For some time I have observed that when I turn on the A/C compressor, the motor runs rough and shakes along with a pulsing groaning/grinding noise
Surely at the end off all the many posts giving advice and so on, this is the key fact. I cannot help but think that replacement of the air con compressor is needed.

Dealer says it is supposed to do that. I know for a fact that it did not used to do it and I am getting rather frustrated. Everytime I talk with them it is suggested I buy a new XJ. I have never kept a car this long, usually now more than two years from new, but I really like this XJ and was hoping I could keep this one for a long time.

Really bummed with Jaguar and service techs at the moment...

Sorry for so many posts, but I just returned from the dealer again and insisted they check other XJs on the lot with me. We tried one with 45K miles and sure enough, whisper quiet and smooth operation from neutral to drive with A/C on, then another with 54K miles and what do you know, it ran even worse than mine although the noise mine makes was not present here. He finally admitted there might be something abnormal and the noise may have something to do with the belts and tensioner/pulleys. AS far as the shudder and vibration, they will contact Jaguar North America, finally, for assistance although he seems to think it may just be normal wear and tear.

Any thoughts, anecdotes, cantor?

They don't care about giving people peace of mind. They care about making and winning bets. They are also sore losers.

Vendors who provide services to such shysters need to say "fine, you sold a policy to fix your customer's problem ... this is the price, if you don't like the price, find someone else to fulfill your contractual obligation".

I'm a dealer tech and my head is just spinning trying to figure out how, IF what you describe is accurate, any dealer personnel could tell you the thing is normal. I just can't fathom it.

Standing by for your report after they have consulted Jaguar.

I appreciate your support and of course you can only go off of what I describe and no doubt I am probably more in tune with my cars when something is not right than most owners are, perhaps to a fault.

But I can confirm, as proved by the other cars we tried at the dealer service department, my car did not have this issue, whether is is due to wear and tear, I don't know, but something is out of spec. The trick is tracking it down...

After 3 days, the dealer has given up, again...so this weekend I am going to do the pulley & belt TSB and see what if any difference this makes.

After mentioning this to a former dealer tech he suggested motor or trans mounts.

Do you see these go bad?

lol they break all the time. look for purple stain around them since theyre fluid filled to dampen NVH(noise vibration harshness)

So now what? Put in a compressor? If that's not it, transmission/torque converter?

From my long distance perspective, and everything I've read here, I'm still hanging my hat on the flexplate as the best possibility. I just can't get my head around it being so elusive. It's a machine, nuts and bolts, there has to be a way to trace that sound, or eliminate down to it. Somebody has to be able to figure it out for you. I don't know, maybe it would befuddle me too, but as yet I've never thrown my hands up or sent someone away because of it.

I just hate mysteries, this kind anyway!

I shared all of the helpful suggestions given here to the dealer. While they have dismissed them all I am not confident they bothered seems if it is not easy to fix they give up as they have plenty of easy money waiting on the service drive.

They have also failed to identify what is causing a D2B failure.

I have two other options, an independent Jag shop has opened nearby and an aquaintance works for another Jag dealer is supposed to put me in touch with one of their lead techs.

Have you had the air-con gas level checked yet? My air-con appeared to be working OK but I got an annoying whine from the system after 5 minutes of running and the compressor was very noisy when listened to under the car. The engine also ran slightly rough when idling, in gear.

I got an air-con 'specialist' to check it and he said the system was fine and my mechanic then said it sounds like the compressor is on the way out.

I checked the Yellow Pages then the Internet and found someone who appeared to really know about air-con.

He also didn't like the sound the compressor was making but agreed to do a re-gas and oil as it was a lot cheaper than replacing the compressor. It turned out that even though the air-con worked well, my system was 1/3 down on gas so was giving the compressor a bit of a workout.

5 months on it is as quiet as anything.
