Default My new to me xj8

Well picked her up from Sydney on monday overnighted in Wolongong
Drove down to Melbourne just under 1000 k's arrived Tuesday late afternoon
Decided to buy some new tyres front and rear while in Melbourne car
has 8.5 and 9.5 artura wheels on it

I was going to try play with profiles
to try and get the speedometer more acurate as I did on my old X300 XJR but tyres where difficult to match without going insane in size's so currently running 245/40/19 front 275/35/19 rears

Few observations so far
Boot is very shallow thought they would have sorted that from X300

Second
Lots of headroom but seat still ridiculously close for such a big car luckily I extended the rails on my X300 so am hoping I can do the same seat does sit lower in the car just does not go back far enough can fit my right foot under the pedals but not my left ended up pretty sore yesterday because of my knees being bent for most of the day
Strange thing in the X300 its the other way round I can get my left foot under the pedals

Thirdly the mirrors dip down when reverse is selected that wouldn't be so bad if the mirror's where bigger but looking at the ground next to my car instead of what's behind me is a worry I can see me fitting a reversing camera
But all in all I'm pretty happy

Funny thing I thought I wasn't going to like the 4.2 V8 engine but think I'm hooked so far

Have you tried adjusting the pedal and steering wheel position as well as the seat?
Ie move the seat back and the pedals forward then adjust the steering well to suit

You can disable the mirror dip on one or both mirrors
Personally I like it being on

Cheers

I want to retain that, helps even w/r avoiding a curb-drop-off exiting me own narrow driveway. But ALSO restore the more 'panoramic' view of the sub-mirrors on my other vehicles. Not just for reversing, either.

AND have fallen in love with the night time auto-dimming feature of Jaguar's choice of mirrors. Which mitigates against the usual suspects amongst add-ons.

Rather than a camera, has anyone tried mounting a second new or recycled auto-dimming inside centre mirror as a supplement - offset to the passenger-side?

Or have a better idea, yet?

Not that I've read about. I guess you could stick one of those small concave 'blind spot' mirrors onto your regular mirror, but it surely won't be very easy to see what's directly behind the car. Thankfully, there is a big back glass to look through

I have those on all other rolling stock. Handy, but they make the glare from the lights of night-time followers or overtakers worse than it already is.

The auto-adjust mirrors appear to be near-as-dammit the same 'Gentex' models also used on many US & Japanese vehicles, ergo common and not uber-costly, used.

I need a new 'something' for my Sonoma besides the outside mirrors anyway, so will try that first and see if they 'die' easily, or retain their functionality.

Back in a week or two with how it pans out as a 'supplement' on the XJ8-L...

UPDATE: New (other-than-Jaguar) Gentex unit arrived today. Destined for my GMC Sonoma, but trialed in various left-right position in the XJ8-L as a supplementary mirror to cover blind-spots and reversing.

No Joy.

For the most part, all one accomplishes with an extra 'flat' mirror is to see more posts and pillars, and/or rather too much of one weatherbeaten drivers's mug, in my case.

Back to the drawing board.

Most effective mirror I ever had for this need was a 'frameless' longish compound-curved (vertical as well as horizontal) 'panoramic' mount I added to my '59 TR3. Order or three of magnitude more effective than the area or 'spot' convex add-ons double-sided-taped to exterior mirrors.

Downside, of course, is that it was a vision-killer at night with close-in following traffic or even carpark lighting, and I have yet to see a curved mirror with anything close to 'auto dimming'.

Also, as 'frameless', and glass, not plastic, they can shatter all-too-easily. That one certainly did, anyway. Fortunately didn't draw blood.

Thanks so far guys

I didn't know you could move the pedals did that today yeah still made for dwarfs but I am confident I can modify the rails as I did in my X300 XJR

It's a pity obviously the test drivers and designers figured no one tall
would buy these cars maybe it was ford cost cutting as my first jag a 91 XJ40 had plenty of leg room

As for the dipping mirrors its a good idea just that they are small mirrors so I was planning to add small round blind spot mirrors like I did on the X300

Not much can be done about the boot being shallow at least the fuel tank is not behind the rear seat so does give some horizontal depth I'll know tomorrow when I head home and try fit all the luggage in
I did buy some soft bags today to transfer from the hard luggage

I do like the air suspension was worried with such low profile tyres it was going to be a rough ride but pleasantly surprised

Just writing my little list of things to do
Which is not as long as the X300 XJR

Tried to get a auto service done while down here but the authorised ZF transmission agents where snowed under till next week ill see if the guy's up home know what they are doing when I get back
