Silly question really but are the boot lids on the X350 XJs meant to open completely by themselves after pressing one of the boot release buttons? Generally unsure, I did just install a fresh pair of struts just to improve th situation!

No. Pressing the trunk release will pop the rear edge of the trunk up about 1". You have to lift it the rest of the way manually.
