Putting Tranny in Neutral
What do you want to wear out faster, the torque converter or the shifting solenoids. Shifting in and out of Drive is just putting more wear on the solenoids. Keeping your foot on the brake to hold the car still because it is still in drive is pushing the temp inside the torque converter up. Granted, the tranny has its own cooling system, so the temp rise is minimal. It is also a "safety" concern because, if your foot accidentally came off the brake, if the car was in neutral, you are not going to roll anywhere fast. Can't say that if the car is in Drive.
The norm' is to leave the vehicle in Drive with your foot on the brake. I was taught this during my Police driver training in the UK.
My X350 4.2 SE has 117,000 miles on the clock and still works OK.

I am really not concerned about actual driving safety, or somebody's driver ed teacher instructions really. I think we all know how to drive here.
Just concerned about the car. And wondering if anyone actaully excercised this recommendation from the owners book.
