Default Torque Wrench Confusion

Pictured from L to R are my 1/2", 3/8" & 1/4" torque wrenches.They are: 21 Nm; 12Nm; 17Nm respectively.

However, I think that I must be reading the 1/2" & 3/8" incorrectly. Surely, the big 1/2" must register more than 21Nm & the 3/8" more than 12 Nm?

The following marks are on the 2 bigger ones:
(Da Nm)
M. KGS

I understand that the first line stands for deca Newton meters. So this means that the 1/2" actually goes to 210 Nm & not 21? & the 3/8" actually to 120 Nm?

Your help is much appreciated; thanks.

Hi Steve,

that's one problem with the cheaper torque wrenches, they are more difficult to read and set...

Coming toyour question:
- a range up to 210 Nm max. for the 1/2" sounds about right, the usually go to something around 200 Nm.Depending on the model, they start at around 20 to 40 Nm as a minimum.
- Same for the 3/8", about120 Nm as a maximum sounds right, as well. The start at a minimum of around 10 to 20 Nm, depending on the model.

- for the 1/4", the 17 Nm you mention as a maximum torque also sounds right. 1/4" torque wrenches can have maximum ranges between 15 and 30 Nm. And then you have the precision torque screwdrivers that also have 1/4" and which much lower ranges than can even start at less than 1 Nm!

Best regards,

Thomas

Hi Steve,
I found my 1/4" drive torque wrench was the most useful one on the engine, and the only time I needed my 1/2" drive torque wrench was for the suspension.
