Types of steering racks
Hi, my 2005 RHD XJR has just sprung a fluid leak from the boot of the steering rack. I tried to search for more information regarding steering rack seal repair kits or even types of steering racks but there seems to be very little information on the steering racks of our cars. Apart from LHD and RHD, can I just check if the steering racks of different models are the same, say between a 6 cylinder vs the V8 vs the V8 supercharged vs the diesel? Are the steering racks interchangeable so I can just buy any reconditioned one and it will fit with no problems or are the models more specific (say V6 only vs V8 only Diesels)? Are there steering seal repair kits available for the X350? Any information on this will be greatly appreciated to help me figure out what to do next to repair my car. Thanks
As far as I know, there is no variation in the racks on the X350/358 models, but there may well be differences between this and the other jaguar cars like XF or XK. Normal practice is to buy a service-exchange unit. These are not cheap. There are, however, used ones available on eBay but whether they are any good is another matter, bearing in mind the youngest used one will be 11 years old. I don't think there are any repair kits for the X350 racks, but there are for earlier ones.

I will have a go with the rebuilt rack, and if it doesn't fit, I'll update the group so that others may benefit in the future.
Thanks very much for your comments Fraser. Really appreciate it.
Ok, I got a rebuilt rack from KBsteering in UK and it fit with no problems. The car seems to be good. Now only time will tell as to how long the rebuilt unit lasts but I'm optimistic as I had previously bought a rebuilt rack for my Mitsubishi GTO several years ago and it's still going strong.
