Is a flash the only way to get into learning-phase ? I read something like removing a fuse on some other ZF-gearboxes..

Herd resets (removing battery terminal) do NOT erase adaptive features from the TCM. It does work on the ECU, but not the TCM.Originally Posted by nebelfuerst

I ordered Mongoose JLR, which I didn't receive yet.
I'm willing to flash on my own, but the procedure how to get the firmware and procedure isn't clear to me.
In a ZF-troubleshooting-guide I read, that the "air intake hose" also might be responsible for bad shifts 3-2 & 2-1. Where's the link between them ?

I looked at buying a Mongoose last year when I bought my 2004 XJR. At that time Drew Technologies said the Mongoose would work only with ODBIII vehicles, which on Jaguar is 2005 and up. You could read codes, but not program any modules. Currently other vendors selling the Mongoose still say, "The Mongoose JLR includes a J2534 driver and delivers full-speed (12mps) USB 2.0 performance. This version is compatible with late model J2534 compliant Jaguar & Land Rover models. This includes 2005 & Up Jaguar and 2005 & up Land Rover, requires a subscription to IDS version 125 & up."
I see the DT website now says it's compliant with the X350, without going into any further details. I see someone said it worked with an '03, but that would be an X308, not an X350, unless you go by the British system of build year rather than model year, i.e., they list the X350 as starting in 2003 while the US shows it in 2004. As far as I know, the US mandated OBDIII beginning in the 2004 model year.
My understanding is that the difference between OBDII and OBDIII is the networking between modules, allowing modules on different busses to communicate. This may not be correct.
Can anyone confirm that the Mongoos will work with the first year X350 (2003 or 2004) with a VIN below G30000?

The mongooser and v131 work fine for my 2003 S type. At $80, its not too much of a risk, considering the cost of having just about anything done by a dealer.

He is referring to a Chinese 'clone' mongoose unit. I have one, as well as few others. You're safer with a legit Drew Tech cable. I don't think mine has any memory, as everytime I use it, the SDD program has to 'update the VCM software', but it never sticks after unplugging it. So is probably ONE of the compromises of the clone.

Yes, I am speaking of a Chinese clone. I have not noticed the VCM update message when I use IDS, but I believe the mongooser (r is for replica) does not have update capability, so that it cannot be remotely bricked. I have a Silca immobilizer tool with this same characteristic.
I looked at a couple of the Chinese clone websites and they said this:

Q: Which year Jaguar car can this cable do?
A: This JLR MAGNOOSE can only do Jaguar car after 2005 year, can not do before 2005."
This could have something to do with V125 of the SDD/IDS software. Apparently, V125 would crash when running Legacy IDS with a Mongoose, so if the car was too old for SDD, which would be pre-2005, the Mongoose wouldn;t work. V126 apparently fixed that problem.
