Default whats the cost of gearbox re flash X350

Hello. I am a newish member. I am looking for a bit of advise please. My car is a 2003. XJ6. Sport. having covered 149000 miles. It came with full service history. I have only had the car a short period of time and the other week it started surging at just under 2000 rpm. The rev counter rising and falling around 200rpm. I notice it more around the 50mph mark. I have looked up on this forum and i think it needs whats referred to as a gearbox re flash. whatever that is ? When the car is cold its is fine. When warmed up, it changes gear very nice, and smooth with no noises or clunks. I have phoned a Jaguar agent near to me in Doncaster and they have quoted around £260 + vat. but could be more when they start work on the car ? This sounds fishy to me. Can anyone please recommend a Jaguar dealer/specialist close to myself who can carry out this repair. I live in Central England. Close to Sheffield. Doncaster. Nottingham. Post code S80. I have looked for the answer within the forum but failed to find the answer i need. Thank you in advance.

Dave.

Hi Dave

You have the "hunting" syndrome that afflicts all cars of the earlier build. A TCM re-flash can sometimes cure it, but generally it doesn't as in my experience. However, it is not something that will wreck anything, and should be considered a feature, not a bug, (where have I heard those words before !). A cure can be effected by changing the torque converter. The hunting is designed in to warm up the tranny fluid, that's why it disappears when the tranny fluid is fully warm. The TC lockup mechanism is utilised for this but the clutch plate profile was such as to make the action noticeable. Later converters had modified clutch plates to disguise the action.

The above was told me by an ex-Jaguar technician now working at my local independent.

The charge from that main agent sounds fishy. My local main agent, Royles, charged me 30 mins labour for a reflash, and no charge for software.

Ha ha, beat me to it Merion1

He is right, Chris is great, a legend......I've travelled from Glasgow to have him work on my car!
I would at least call him and have a chat, see where you go from there.

Tell him Jaguarforums.com advised you to seek his advice.

Hope to hear.....

Hello.

Thank you all for your replies. I have spoken on the phone today to Chris at the jag Specialist Doncaster as recommended. A very nice helpful person. I did mention the Jaguar forum had recommended him. I am taking my car over to him next week. Chris says after a test ride and a few quick checks he will be able to tell me the problem. Its sounding like either a re flash or a new torque converter. Ill let you know how i got on on my return from the Jag specialist. Thank you all again for your info and help. The Jaguar forum is a fantastic source of great help.

Regards Dave.
