XJ8 2004 Transmission Fault
Transmission Fault error message appeared when under medium acceleration entering the freeway. I felt something but unsure what, which caused me to look at the dash - saw the message and continued to drive 15 miles to destination. Stayed in the righthand lane and probably did 65 mph. After a short period - ten minutes. Got back in car - started it and no message appeared on the dash. I did drive carefully but reached 70-75 with no incidents. I had a variation of this issue a year ago but it included going into limp mode and a parking brake message as well. The car is in pristine condition and I love it but I fear this current issue will get worse. I believe the simple engine diagnostics will come back with "no codes stored"
3 things first hand but get codes too
-watch for leaks with a cardboard underneath .
1. the pan itself ,2 the electric connection (connector sleeve can leak), 3 the two transmission cooler lines (aluminum) left side of car going towards and below engine towards the main coolant radiator also left side heat exchange part beside radiator , next to airfilter , two connections to the radiator , feel those and go down touching them , there will be rubber hose that tend to leak .
ZF6HP26 DOES NOT LIKE LOW LEVEL OF OIL.
THE OIL IS ZF LIFEGUARD 6 .
OIL LEVEL CHECK MIGHT BE HELPFULL.
WATCH A Zf 6hp26 transmission oilchange and oillevel procedure.
-There is a ground cable attached to the tranny and body cleaning for good connection can be helpfull considering the age.
-often problems come from the rear wheel speed sensors and the reluctor rings behind the rear brake discs. Normally with Dsc speedcontrol abs not available reluctor ring should be clean and shiny . Not swollen by rust underneath , even a dent in them is detectable . Some wd 40 and a brass brush cleaning gently can help. The sensors are easy to exchange and then there is the gap in between them and the rings. 8mm hex screw might break of
Lastely did you ever have an oilchange done
Zf 1068.298.062 and zf 1068.298.090 . After all those years and miles .
2003 xj8 230k miles had two oilchanges
