Hi all, my first question... three weeks into car ownership. '98 xj8 - twice now it's happened. both times:
- after decending down slight to moderate incline
- about 10 minutes after cold start in the morning
- had downshifted tranny into 4th, then 3rd on the incline
- back to drive at a stop sign
- sport mode off

car continues to run (idle) fine, in gear, and pushing the throttle does absolutely nothing. no increase in rpm, not even trying to move the car. no engine lights. Shut it off, restarted perfectly, and drove perfectly for the next 1000km - until it happened a second time this morning. Thankfully it happened in the country with almost no traffic!

Is that what limp mode is? any other ideas?

update - was able to recreate the issue this morning by manually downshifting first to 4th at about 70kph, then into 3rd at about 55/60kph. Car seemed to pop out of gear and was still running, but nothing happened when pushed the throttle, so I pulled over, and after 30 seconds it seemed to pop back into gear and drove fine the rest of the way. Never have felt a rough shift or mis-shift, feels like I think it should.

has never happened when leaving in Drive - so I guess that's my solution for now... but if anyone has ideas what the cause is, I'd love to hear them.

 

The manual j-gate is using a different set of controls to change the gears on the transmission. You could try a fluid change to see if that helps, or just leave it in drive, and don't try to do anything else manual. I've had issues and messages popup on the dash (Electrical something) going manual as well, so I don't do that anymore.
