Hi, I've got a 96 xjr that has a practically mint interior, but can't be registered in NZ due to the massive amount of cert work that's needed
There's a 1999 xjr available, however the interior's tatty (Plus the late 90s interior looks nowhere near as good as the 80s-90s interior, imo)
I was wondering if anyone's attempted a trim swap like this before? Many components seem like they can be directly swapped, but due to some buttons being in different places I'd probably have to modify the loom
A lot of it should swap over fairly easily, physically speaking, though you may run into weird snags like subtle contour differences in the sheet metal or hole placement that would inhibit a smooth swap. Climate control module interface and control module are the same, but the cluster will get tricky. X308 cluster uses CAN for KPH, RPM, and temp gauges, whereas the 300 relies on pulse signals for speeds, and resistance for temp. The 308 ECM does put out a conventional pulse signal, but probably needs correction for the 6 cylinder tach. The 308 ABS module doesn't offer vehicle speed out directly, just over CAN as far as I can tell, so you could "borrow" the message from one of the wheels, but the rate is incorrect requiring correction. Also, with the 308 cluster absent, you will have a module out of the loop, even if you bridge the CAN lines it's token (module present message) will be absent from the network, potentially disrupting the other modules performance. Lastly, the climate system relies on these signals out from the cluster (KPH, RPM, temp), if you don't have them working correctly, you will lose functionality there also (most notably AC compressor clutch enablement). Not to mention the message center from the 308 cluster will be lost, if you had a fail-safe state from this swap you wouldn't know straight away. Guessing you'd leave the column alone, so you'd have redundant lighting controls. Window switch packs are a consideration also.
