Default 3.2 x300 auto gear change problem or not?

Hi all I have a 1997 x300 3.2. Today the old girl had an issue. I had just started out on my way to way, the engine had only been running for about five minutes and it was all done at 20mph. Any I’m at a T junction and joined a 60mph road from a stand still. I had to accelerate at about 75% throttle. I old lifted her nose and was off. 1st to 2nd and then 3rd gear change was fine but it got stuck in 3rd gear. I didn’t notice until the rpm limiter kicked in. I took my foot of the accelerator and slowed down and tried again and all was good. The car has never done this before. Is this a sign of bad things to come. Why would it stay in 3rd and not move up a gear? When slowing down I could feel it going down gears just fine. Anyway all seems to be working now just wondering what/ why this happened. Any advice would be great.

cheers all

I don't have the 3.2 with the ZF4HP22 transmission , but there is a mechanical shift linkage that I would not touch until learning more about from others

This can be seen in the Big manual in the 4th post in the upcoming link

Thank you for that. So I now have more questions. This time about kick down. I can get the box to kick down way before I go to fully throttle. Say I’m crushing at 60 mph if I put my foot down a little more the car will accelerate, if I go passed 60% throttle the box will drop down a gear is this what kick down is?
now once again let’s say I’m at 60 mph and I floor it, 100% throttle it will drop a gear then a second later drop another gear. Is this normal?
should it only drop one gear and only do that when the pedal is fully depressed?
