97 xj6 emissions failure/ code reading/ "not ready"
Went to get emissions on my 97 XJ6 recently transplanted (from Kansas to Georgia. Previous owner had since 8k miles, meticulously maintained, garaged, babied, everything fixed right....but I suspect that when the crankshaft sensor was replaced in Oct, '11 (1200 miles ago) that something happened to the computer when the battery was disconnected.
The Emissions machine reports that 4 out of 6 components are not ready to read the report. We can only have two fail to pass.
I suspect that the emissions on the cat are all good but can't get the machine to read the status. Might be an O2 sensor?
I left there after a very helpful and sympathetic guy with 10 years experience said that most likely it is not emissions but some glitch in computer.
I drove it 30 minutes in all kinds of traffic, came back.....still no go.
He went in and zeroed out the computer and tried it again. No go.
The car runs great all the time and idles perfectly when in gear. Slip it into neutral or park and there is a very slight lope detected that the previous owner said was characteristic of the Jag. My old Land Cruiser and 3 previous Jeeps, all with straight sixes) did not lope in neutral. I think there might be a weak spark plug wire (plugs replaced 1200 miles ago).
Would that "misfire" diagnosis that he picked up on his machine be a bad or loose plug wire and prohibit the computer from booting itself to read the codes....????
I need some expert out there to tell me what it probably is and how to get-r-done.
Thanks so much. Hope I have included enough info to guide any experts out there cause I love this car!
This is my first attempt to do this on a forum (the Cruiser and jeeps seldom have issues

Byron:
If the problem is not your cats, there is a reasonable chance that your problem is one of the calibrations that are done with dealer level software. Have a look in the archives about that and "lambda re-orientation. If you want to give that a go, I PM'ed you with an offer to get that done.
