Aftermarket Stereo Dimming - Odd Behaviour

Aftermarket Stereo Dimming - Odd Behaviour
My aftermarket Pioneer headunit (DEH-P7150UB) has an auto dimming function that is supposed dim the display when you switch on the cars lighting system.
However, there is a slight problem: It seems to be reversed. Here is an example of what will happen:
1) Jaguar variable dimmer knob as clicked home (full intensity setting) - Turning Jaguar light switch to Park or Dipped headlights has no effect on stereo display.
2) Jaguar variable dimmer knob is any position other than home - Turning Jaguar light switch to Park or Dipped headlights makes the stereo display brighter.
What is going on? Turning the headlights on is supposed to make the stereo display go down a notch, not up...
And why is nothing happening at all when the dimmer knob is clicked in it's home position?
Now I can remember during the installation: there was only one "ILL" wire from the Pioneer, and only one Jaguar wire for illumination, so there is no way I could have "connected them up wrong".
Anyone have any ideas?

Oubadah, a mere mortal like myself could not possibly offer you electronics advice, but I will be following with interest.
So here is my off the wall thought.
1, on full intensity setting, every other setting is over ridden and therefore no change to radio lighting, and all the electricity is used up.
2, on reducing the dash display setting the electricity (get mixed up with volts/amps) has to go somewhere and thus finds an outlet in your radio display.
Like I said I know not a great deal about electronics, I'm still trying to figure out how to get the smoke back in the wires.
