Default Coils and coil gaskets.

I've got a quick question guys. I have been looking at a new set of coils as I have a miss after the car warms up for five mins and when starting out from a stop. At highway speed she runs smooth and shifts good. I've found that the coils I have do not have gaskets. The coils are mounted to the head with no gasket between the head and coil. 2 questions, are these gaskets needed and why? Second are these gaskets something that can be made with gasket material like you would for a thermostat housing? I'd appreciate any help with this, you guys have been a great help before I'm sure you will be again.
Thx
Bookem

AFAIK they serve no purpose other than keeping dirt out. Make 'em out of whatever you want.

I was missing a couple gaskets for a couple years. Never seemed to hurt anything and, actually, no dirt go it. If you live in a dusty area, though. that might not be the case.

What kind of coils are you getting?

Cheers
DD

Haven't decided yet. I am not getting any lights but will try pulling codes. If I can find one coil consistently bad then I will get original equipment. Probably get the 6pack from ebay for around 200.

A failing coil may not give a code. Try observing in the dark to see if you spot arcing.

There was recent discussion of coil quality and the below were recommended as being of OEM quality. But I don't think you'll find six for $200. Please post follow up if you do.

Turns out the coils are the issue. Got codes for multiple misfires. After pulling the coils, 2 of them have cracked and burnt boots. Haven't been able to find boot replacements but will continue to look. I did the old electric tape trick and reinstalled the coils. Runs like a new one now. Took a drive and it never stuttered at a stop sign or on acceleration.
Here is the link for the coils I purchased. Hope they hold up, if not I'll at least have new boots.
