Like Faraday sitting in his baby chair and watching water come out of a tap, I find things under my hood.
like the item pictured. Is that part of heating the interior of the car? I don’t hear it make any sound. I’m changing the thermostat in a few minutes (sunny 34F), but my heater blows cold right now.
Thank you for this forum, the response is overwhelming 😭. I may actually get to love this car, as many here obviously do. Thing under the thermostat housing. Thing under the thermostat housing.
#2 can’t get smog test to run for PA state test. Put 140 miles on it and rejected. ((I was disconnecting the battery because I thought I had a parasitic drain, which MAY have been from a bad alternator.)
#3 may be a stretch but a little white sludge on dip stick.
THERE WAS NO THERMOSTAT!
installed Stant 248-192JV 48019, gasket was out of stock, but counterman said there are two O rings. That wasn’t right, and rather than drive around I made one from some cork rubber gasket I had. I installed it without shellac. Old school. No punches.
1. now dash gage works, and I have lots of cabin heat.
2. Maybe low engine temp disallowed the SMOG completion.
3. maybe with hot engine I can clean up moisture that was in engine after sitting for 3 years. (Oil has been changed).
And failure to warm up all the way probably prevents the smog test to run (Catalyst Efficiency), it would still show incomplete. The test will usually run during a steady drive (3 miles or so?) at speeds between 40-50 mph, without stops.
Maybe ask Santa for an OBD2 scan tool for Christmas? It will show you when the monitors are complete. And of course any trouble codes that could possibly come up in an imperfect world.
The whiney air injection pump is a monitored system too.
Good work on the thermostat, you were right to make your own gasket of the correct shape. The OEM gasket is still available but only from online retailers. Don't over-tighten the housing bolts!
Most helpful. Thank you.
I do have a blue driver brand reader. I will run it to see how much stuff it can do. That would save time from running over to the mechanic.
I thought it was going to be smooth sailing because there was no engine light. How wrong I was!
