Gear Shift Selector Slop
Hello,
I've got a '96 XJ12 and the gear shifter isn't anywhere as precise as my XJ40's. The XJ40 selector practically clicks at each gear position, which the X300 gear selector is very mushy and not precise feeling at all.
Also, when the shifter is in reverse, there's some play where the Reverse indicator light isn't lit (neither are the reverse lights). If I jiggle the shifter to the right position a bit, I can get the reverse lights and indicator light to come on.
Also, when selecting 2nd gear on the J-gate, it feels like the gear engages at the VERY end of the shifter movement, almost like the shifter could pop out of the 2nd gear position to 3rd.
My question is: Is this common? Is there any way to adjust the shift cable to remove any slack in the shifter cable? If so, how is this done? From under the ski slope or under the car at the transmission?
Thanks,
Nick

I had similar problems last year with my discovery 2 which were traced to the gearbox inhibiter wxyz switch and dirty contacts within the switch along with another connector on the gearbox.
I think this switch is called a linear switch in the jaguar world. The lights could be dirty contacts within the switch and second gear problem possibly an alignment/adjustment issue on the switch.
Cheers
Steve
