Default gearshift surround fix

I've been frustrated for many years by the rear of the gear shift surround on my '96 XJ6 kicking up at the back when I shifted into park. I've tried making replacements for the broken tabs on the leather/plastic surround to no avail. Now I've taken a different tack. I took off the ski slope (after buying a spare on Ebay) and cut off about 1/4 inch of it forward of the shifter opening making the opening larger. I marked where I wanted the cut to end with masking tape. I made the cut all across the forward part of the opening and around the corners a little. I used the plastic piece with the normal/sport switch as a guide. I used my Dremel with a carbide bur. This allowed the leather/plastic piece and the plastic piece that houses the normal/sport transmission switch to all move forward and out of the way of the shifter when in Park. This worked on my car.

Mine does that as well. I actually snapped my bezel trying to get it to seat tightly. Had to buy a new one. Might have to give it a go.

Are there any subsequent alternative fixes offered by members on the forum and is it possible the bezel may be warped?
