glitter into motor oil
Goodmorning,
one week ago, I changed the motor oil of my x300 xj6 3.2 . (162.000 km)
i change oil every 8000 km.(20w50 or 10w60)
at first sight nothing strange.
the oil has been drained in a open tank. the color is dark but not bad and very fluid.
However, what worries me is this: i founded in the bottom of the tank some glitter/flakes visible only with a flashlight.
if you take a few drops of oil and put them on a black surface with a strong light you can see some very small glitter floating.
could be the friction material of chain guide tensioner or something else?
(mine secondary chain rattle around 2000/2200 rpm)
I bought the car one year ago.(148.000 km)
I think that in the past oil changes were not the best
May I have moved much dirt?
What could it be, in your opinion?

Motorcarman ?
" mine secondary chain rattle around 2000/2200 rpm "
Are you referring to the upper or lower timing chain ?
See page 56 of the attached file below
Some Rislone brand / type of oil treatment to free something up ?

G’day Andrea,
We don’t know where you are but there is the possibility of having a sample of your engine oil sent to a laboratory to be analysed, which should reveal the nature of the metal flakes.
In any case I would carry out another oil and filter change fairly soon and see if the flakes are still there.
Cheers and good luck,
Jeff.
P.S. I just googled engine oil analysis and came up with this information in Australia where I live.
