Harman Kardon Wiring?
Currently I am in the process of purchasing a great condition 95 xj6 with only 60,000 miles as my college ride. The only option it doesn't have is the Harman Kardon Surround Sound. Our old xj6 years ago had this and according to my parents it is a must have. Coming from the world of Volvo I'm very used to cars being pre-wired for any option you fancy to add after the fact. I have access to an entire parts car from our neighbors (our old xj6 in fact) and was wondering how difficult/easy it would be to install the HK system. Are these cars prewired for the premium speakers/amp/cd changer or would this swap involve some fairly invasive harness swapping?
I did what you intend to do.
I upgraded my 96 XJ6
As it is an european car I can tell you that it was not pre-wired.
I assuming also you car is not. It was a choice (ordinary or HK) by ordering the car and so they produced it.
So take out everything from the donor-car. (also keep in mind the that you need to replace or modify a-pillarcover, rear doorcards and rear shell.
I disconnected the ordinary-loom and added the HK Wiring-loom to the car.

Interesting. How hard is it to replace the loom? Is it separate for the audio system or is it "integrated" with the whole car? I can get all the trim (a-pillars/ rear parcel tray) pretty easy, but am I correct in understanding you that there needs to be modifications to to the body sheel to fit the subwoofer?
If I remember correctly as I had the the hat shelf apart , I believe the sub woofer speaker hole is already there on my non - premium system . The wiring is a whole different animal to be advised on later . See wiring schematic figure 18.1 and 18.2 . Notice where the speaker output wires come out of the rear vs. forward side of the car . I have a solution for you later for this loominasation anomaly .

The wiring loom for the HK System is separate. you just have to take it out from the donor car carefully and put it into your car. It is up to you wether you will take out the ordinary wiring loom in your car or wether you just leave it in.
The whole for the subwoofer is already there, only on the damping mat you need to cut out the perforated part for the woofer.

You can run generic speaker wires though the roofline plastic molding other then disassembling the center console and running them through there underneath the rear floor carpet . You will have the rear seat out anyway to get to the rear parcel shelf . If the white connector for the non - premium is there you can tap the rear mounted Power amplifier speaker wires into there . The input into the amplifier is I believe a digital loom that may or may not have been layed in at the factory . If not you'll have to tap into the analog signal wires and bypass the control heads final Toshiba amplifiers ( x 4 ) inside the Alpine AJ9500A . The Jaguar HK setup uses a higher quality door speaker but I do have information on repairing the non - premiem Philips speakers . They rot the cone surrounding diaphragms out .
Any questions , just ask .
Thanks , Parker
