Hi. It is an air pump, which sends air to the exhaust system and thins the exhaust gas while hot. Hope this helps

I might be wrong, but it looks like the air pump, which were electrically driven in lieu of belt driven on previous models.

We did not get them here, so I am going from picture memory.\????.

Many thanks guys. I knew it wasn't on the xjr but was suspicious it might have been something to do with the secondary air injection - of which I know nothing about.

I believe it is on the other side on the XJR's (where req'd - lucky Aussies!) and yes, you might say it is the Achille's heel of the secondary air system. Its real purpose is to light the P0411 code in hopes of enticing you down to the dealership or parts store to spend the beer-money....but the manual says pumping air (with oxygen) into the exhaust heats the catalysts up more quickly making your car less environmentally threatening and giving California pols a measure of peace regarding the poor sob who has a Toyota and thus still has his beer money to light one more bag of charcoal briquets for his BBQ.......

Yep,

Thats why we got 3 V12's, NO cats, NO pumps, NO nothing, basic as they come.

Go like stink. and encourage alternative fuels, coz I'm using all the real stuff in the V12's.

Dealers NEVER get my money, EVER.

NO emission testing in my part of our island, lots of smiles.

Lol....Liberty's last bastion! Alternative fuels? Like Texaco in lieu of Shell?

Although saddled with cats....at least here in our little corner of TX paradise....our county continues to show DFW the finger, thus we have basic veh. inspection for $14.50, not the $60+ emissions/CEL **** exam the neighbors get! So I clear the once-a-month Secondary air code with my $20 OBDII scanner...
