Default Oil.....again

Hi all,

From browsing the forums, it seems that 10w40 semi synth is th oil of choice for an x300.

However I have a friend who works for valveoline and all their documentation shows that a 5w30 fully synth is the most appropriate oil for an x300.

Any thoughts?

5/30 is one of the approved weights shown in the owners manual for operation in cooler/cold climates...I can't remember the temp range specifically.

Actually I ran 5/30 in mine year-round for many tens of thousands of miles before it was pointed out to me that it was specifically not suggested for the supercharged engines! Oooops ! I can't say that I've noticed any bad consequences. The engine has 110k miles and purrs like a tomcat in a dairy. Oil consumption is 1qt/4000 miles, with 5000 miles change intervals.

Nowadays I used 10/30 or 10/40.

Cheers
DD

Same as Doug.

I now run 10W/40 full synthetic in the AJ16. It is changed twice year, no matter how few/many kms it does. I use it all year round, as I see no sense in a summer/wimter oil.

It was run on 15W/40 Diesel oil for 12 months after I got it, as the internals of the engine had waaaay too much crud on them for my liking. Now it is as clean as I like at 180k kms, and when and IF I ever tear it down ( NO plans) it will be scrubbed out of course.

My V12's all run the same oil, and that is my choice as all and sundry CLAIM 20W/50 in that engine, no idea why, mine are all sweet on the lighter oil, even the PreHE at 480+k kms. Mind you, I did run the 20W/50 in them waaaay back, until I used my own brain and went lighter, and there was a noticeable difference in all the engines, they felt sweeter, and a tad snappier.

Going with Brad Penn dino oil here. It has higher ZDDP numbers and I think the cam and valves like that.

BTW, BP is the old Kendall which was a superb oil.

Asking 'which oil is best' is no different than asking 'which beer is best' in a crowded bar. You'll get a huge variety of opinions, some of which are verbose and quite convincing with their spiel. Again similar to beer, NONE of them will be able to quantify their beliefs as to why the other beers are inferior.

Choose from amongst the OEM recommended viscosities and whatever brand makes you happiest.
