I'm in Australia, and I'm looking to purchase a 1996 XJ6 with 109,000ks, and was an import from Japan. Buyer wanting $14,000 AUD.
It's in great condition, minor issue like Traction Control Light on, been sitting for a while so slight flat spot in tires, it's been around 1 year. Runs well, engine sounds healthy, shifts nicely. Has had a big service 1 year ago to get a Roadworthy (bushes, fluids, belts, rubbers etc)
I couldn't find many details on Japanese imports. It's amazing how expensive X300's are becoming!
It also has a Japanese GPS with a CD unit in the boot to load up the GPS navigation, very interesting stuff, though I'll be getting it removed (looks unsightly)
Just wanting some thoughts from the Jag guys - do you ever forsee any problems with imported Jags form Japan? (besides amendments to make it compliant)
Be a little wary on this car.
It is a 3.2 litre which is not as valuable as a 4.0 litre.
It doesn't appear to have cruise control. Apparently Jags sold to Hong Kong and Japan lacked this feature which is pretty standard in Australia.
It is overpriced and with an imported background will be difficult to sell onwards.
$14K will buy a good 4 litre X300 with an Australian delivery history.
The one I am currently driving cost me $6K but needed $1K of tyres and registration. It was advertised at $8K with 200,000ks. X300 visiting Warwick cemetery.

I see your points - I think I just fell in love with the colour (and relatively low k's)
I think I will hold off. If you know any X300's being sold (not on the regular marketplaces, and preferably located in Vic) please let me know.
Thanks for the information so far, I'm still tempted, (the colour and the low k's) however it's still $14,000, base model, 3.2 with no cruise control, which certainly isn't ideal.
I think a fairer price would be around the $10,000 mark.
If it had cruise control, it would have a black rubber diaphragm just fwd of the throttle body butterfly on top with some mechanical linkage to the butterfly bellcrank
The cruise control runs on it's own independent vacuum tubing totally isolated from the engine vacuum tubing
It will have it's own vacuum pump and vacuum modulator behind the left headlights low
The car may already be wired to except the system but would be a task of getting parts and confirm wiring loom is in place
See figure 8.01 of the wiring guide PDF

The cruise control is a lever switch in the right hand side of the console. it is not there in your interior photo.
Looking for a car?
Check on all of the google sites like Gumtree Carsales etc. and be patient. Just insert Jaguar X300 into the search engine.
I spotted a 96 3.2 Australian delivered car with 200Ks for $8900 in Victoria on Gumtree.
Your import ex Jap Jag is not worth that much.
Another way is to insert "wanted Jaguar X300" into websites and similar publications.
Cheers
i saw this up on grays auction about 6 months ago.
thought it sold then.
mmmm.....
is it back up on grays?
i did not see it but those are the photos from the last grays auction listing.
maybe the buyer is trying to resell it?
it looked cool but too much for what it is.
would rather spend a bit more and save for a daimler double six.
i got my 4.) sov from grays auction for $2650.
admittedly it had 350 000km,
needed a little work,
but as everyone here can see it is pretty nice and its issues are not severe and with some love i am in it so far for under $6000 including my customisation.

i always look on car sales (some nice ones but overpriced)
gumtree (big mix of cheap and expensive)
llyods auctions and grays.
the auction sites can occasionally have good deals.
i saw an x308 recently go for about $4000 there.
keep waiting for another cheap x300 to come up so i can buy a parts car
Seems that XJ6's are rising in price now, seems like all petrol cars are that are a bit different, or a V8.
Then again, I reckon the prices are stabilising and will hopefully drop off, it'll be good for buyers ;D
Last question - I am now eyeing off a 1996 XJ6 Sport - I was looking at some paperwork from a Jaguar website, and apparently, the Sports and Sovereigns came with 8 Speakersasstandard? I always thought it was 4 speakers, 1 in each door.
I've attached a screenshot below - any thoughts on this? And idea where the other 4 speakers are hiding?
Granted this is a separate issue, but didn't want to start another thread.
The world of Jags is so exciting.

Why fuss around with the number of speakers in a car. Chances are that in a 25 +year old car many are stuffed.
Stick to the basics of a sound car and not be distracted by audio systems.
I got rid of the original Jaguar radio in my X300 and bought a decent radio (Pioneer) from a wrecker for $25.
I fixed a couple of speakers with failing cones for about $10 each.
I know you need to learn about these Jag things but remember they are simply motor cars put together by robots with some human input.
Keep searching and remember the first Jag you ever buy is not the last Jag you will ever own.
Cheers
I have a Japanese import car and can personally speak to the catalyst temperature sensors . Mine are unplugged and removed due to damage and not being realistic to replace them . Once every 5 or 10 starts I get the cat temp warning light for 5 seconds and it goes away .
it’s not ideal , but it’s just an exhaust thermocouple there’s no magic going on there . In my opinion not a big issue .
There is a big difference between retail and dealer auction prices in Japan. What you need to do is find a dealer in Japan who specialized in buying auction cars and exporting them. I'm sure there are a number in Australia, as well in Japan.
When you buy a car at auction, there auction house will inspect the cars and write a condition report. That grades the both on the exterior and interior, typically I would want a 4B car or better. Exterior is graded 1-5, with 5 being a new car, 1 being a wreck. Interior is graded A-D, with A being new and D being torn seats, cigarette burns, missing parts etc. Usually the auction houses are quite conservative in their gradings. The car cars that come up for auction usually have at most 72 hours of notice before the sale time. You will need to decide quickly what to bid and if the car is suitable. You'll need to work with your buyer to determine in advances what you are looking for and what condition/colour etc.
IMHO, I would never again buy a car sight unseen. Digital pictures lie like a rug. You're the one holding the bag and usually without any real recourse. The cheapest Jag you ever bought is the most expensive you'll ever own. Enough with the platitudes. Bill Mac is spot on. I have a '97 R. I would never have dreamed of buying a NA car. There must be a car for you there in Oz. The sound system is only as good as the speakers and the OEMs in place are toast. Especially that sub woofer in the shelf. It'll sound like a Star Wars Pod racer. The traction control/ ABS unit on the bulk head side has without a doubt corroded wires w/o insulation, shorting out. I wrapped mine in stripped off insulation and wound it with non adhesive tape. They go into the body of the unit and I wasn't digging into that can of worms. That '96 Sport is worth looking at. Good luck with your search.
I've been hunting around, and came across a very nice example which I'll be picking up in the next few days, an Australian delivered 1995 Jaguar XJ6.
Thanks all for your responses - you've all been very helpful.
Keep an eye out on this page, I'll post photos and a summary of the car in the next 7 days or so.
