Default Parts Interchangeability between series II & III

I know this topic has been brought up and I promise I did perform a search and found some threads & links, but honestly none of what I saw answers my specific questions, so here we go.

I just picked up a 1975 XJ Coupe and she needs………….everything, and I mean everything.

My direct question is: up to what year within the XJ family will parts fit?

Which parts you ask…….

Bonnet, rear deck lid, front fenders, bumpers, lights, side marker lights, as well as all the other exterior trim, front windshield, back glass, front & rear suspension parts, rear quarter panels, rocker panels, sills, as well as a complete dash & dashboard and center console.

If I install an engine from a 1984 to 1987 model will I have to modify the engine mount points?

I mentioned those model years because from everything I’ve read they seem to be the very best 4.2 engines from the entire line.

Currently she has the 5.3 twelve cylinder that I do not want.

Many other parts I plan on buying new, but this car has a good amount of rust so I’m hoping to pick up a donor car to cut metal from hoping it will mate right up but I’m not sure of the panel sizing with these cars.

This is the first Jaguar I’ve ever attempted to restore so all of this is brand new to me.

I’m finding lots of donor cars to buy but I’m pulling my hair out because I want to decide on the car where the parts will fit with the least amount of hassles and custom modification work.

Any and all answers are welcome, thank you

Rockauto won't have a lot of parts left, but you can use them to cross-reference all the applications of each part. To the left of the "info" button, click the part number in blue to see all cars that used the same part.

None of the bodywork is going to match from an x300 to a 1975 xj. I can't speak for the engine mounts but I know the transmission mount was simplified, so that will be different. Its going to be a lot of fiddly research.

I'm curious to see what others say about it.

Thank you so much, that does help.

I went on the SNG Barratt web site, and they do a pretty good job of distinguishing between the years in terms of what will fit what.

The confusing thing however is that it's not all black & white.

Certain body pieces will fit everything from 1969 up through 1987, and other pieces fall into much shorter ranges like 69 to 75, or 80 to 87, etc., etc., etc.

You would think that by now somebody would have come up with a comprehensive database that shows what can fit what throughout all the model years from the first one to the last.

I have a line on a 1975 sedan with a 4.2 that isn't running but it's not locked up either, and the seller says that most of the steel is in good shape.

No matter what I get I plan on rebuilding the engine anyway, so I'll just have to do the "flanged top hat liner sleeve" deal to ensure that I don't have head gasket, or overheating issues. The machine shop I contacted has done several of them and the guy told that once that modification is done they last forever without giving any problems at all.

I'm thinking of just pulling the trigger on that one and calling it a day as I'm sure I can make most of the interior from the front seats forward fit my coupe, as well as most of the body panels.

I know the doors on the coupes were sedan doors that jaguar extended to make a little longer to fit the coupe's, but I'm pretty confident that a 1975 sedan would be a good donor car for my 1975 coupe. I'm also hoping that front windshield from the 75 sedan will fit my coupe as it needs a front windshield.

Thanks for the reply......

This is the forum for the car you have: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...s-i-ii-iii-16/. This forum is for the 1995-97 cars.

In regards to parts interchangeability, take a look at Jaguar Heritage's site, they have all the parts books online. Launch page: https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...-jaguar-parts/
Series II and older Series III (pre 1985) are here: https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...le-information

Note also that for the Series III the USA did not get the V12 sedans, while the rest of the world did up to 1992. For the USA only, Series III production stopped in 1987 ( when the XJ6 was discontinued) but the rest of the world continued to be able to buy the Series III V12 for another 5 years.
