Default Picked up a 95 XJR with steering problems...

Yesterday I received a 95 XJR with 123k miles or so on it. The vehicle isn't in terrible shape, but definitely needs some TLC. I am not new to Jag, we have owned a 2004 and currently own a 2005 xjr. I am a DIY mechanic and have worked on several vehicles including my 96 Range Rover so I have some experience. I have never worked on a Jaguar before (mainly cause ours have never broke down, they've been great cars).

So here is the story, I bought this thing for $1300 knowing the steering rack had been destroyed because the owner kept driving it when the bolts fell off of one side... I've been looking around for new racks and have found several used ones, but I am wondering if there is a good parts source for Jags that I ought to try first.

I have a couple questions about the system, as I haven't come across one quite so unique. I THINK I found what is the power steering pump on the right side of the engine under the exhaust manifold. It took me forever to find it and noticed it wasn't connected to any pulleys or belts. Is it electric? If it is, would it be ok if I disconnected it so it doesn't run when I start the engine? Thanks in advance!

For parts, I'd contact Coventry West, or Jagbits. Good luck with the 95! Gunna be a great car.

Power steering pump is not electric.

Sounds like you have the wrong part in sight. Trace down the pipe leading from the pump reservoir to the pump, (unless they are together. I don't know the exact layout). Also the steel tubes from the pump go to the rack valve, which is at the bottom of the steering column where it goes into the rack. This valve diverts fluid to one or other side of the rack piston when steering torque is detected, (by a torsion bar).

The p/s pump is engine driven and mounted on the right side of the block. I'm having a brain fade at the moment as to whether it is driven off a crank gear or the one of the timing gears or what....but it isn't a conventional belt driven pump

Cheers

There is a gear located on the crank in the front. Didn't know what it was for, and I know I have found the PS pump I just didn't see it attached to a belt so it made me scratch my head a bit. Thanks for the input everyone. I'll order a new rack and pray that the pump is fine. Especially because it won't be easy replacing it .

I do have another question (sorry it wasn't in the prior post). Will a steering rack from a non-supercharged 95 96 97 Jaguar XJ work for mine? Thanks again.
