If for some reason I couldn't get the correct fuel grade, I'd go one up but definitely not down.

sorry to disagree, with the method you mention, it is not right and will not give nor create an average octane rating.

We only have one station that sells 94 octane, and it's E10. Everything else is 91 AKI, which is 100% gasoline here, no ethanol. I'd rather not use ethanol in my 18 year old XJR, so 91 octane it is. I've got the "Andy bracket" BTW.

The mid range gasoline (89 AKI) sold by most retailers is a blend of 87 and 91 fuel.
