Default Some issues with my new purchase... any views

Hey all,

Taken on a 1995 x300 XJR really pleased with it but it has some issues

Firstly the gearchanges can be a bit harsh at times. would it be worth changing the ATF ?

The car runs pretty cold... tonight driving it home the temp sensor got right into the blue bit how bad a job is a thermostat ? and how easy is it to bleed all the air out of the water system on a x300 after it has been drained ?

The autodimming mirror on the car is broken ... roughly how much would a replacement from a breaker be and can you retrofit a standard style rear view mirror?

Thanks all.

James

THey have a history of t'stats sticking open. You don't have to drain the coolant to change it...but that may be advised if you just acquired it. YOu can do it with loss of less than a quart. Beware the elbow - they break easily. SOme had an o-ring seal, others a gasket.

Not a bad idea, especially if history is unknown.

Since you have a trans drain plug you can drain the pan (about 4 quarts), refill, drive a couple days, repeat, repeat. Eventually all the oil will be fresh. And you can alos drop the pan and replace the filter...also not a bad idea.

But are you in "sport" mode? that firms up (nad delays) the shifts a fair bit

As mentioned, replace the thermo. Easy job. No special bleeding techniques needed on this engine. just run the engine and top off to the "max" line in the reservoir.

Not sure on price from a breaker but finding a good one might be a problem...they're known to fail.

Can't see any reason a standard mirror wouldn't work <shrug>

Cheers

Sport mode is fun but kills mpg in congested city driving lol

I just replaced my auto-dim mirror with one from a Chevy that has auto dim, compass & temp functions. Got it off ebay for $40 with everything, including the temp probe. It wasn't all that difficult. The one issue I didn't have to deal with is the mounting "button", the piece glued to the windshield. Not only did my auto-dim feature fail, but the original glue failed also, so replacing everything with a different brand wasn't a problem.

See the thread "X300 rear view mirror questions" for more info & some poor photos I took.
