Question Steering column reach "groan", means what?

My automatic tilt/extension (reach) steering column has started to "groan" every once in a while when automatically extending when the key is inserted, usually when the ambient temperature is pretty high.

I initially thought it was the plastic shroud and the rubber curtain between the shroud and binnacle that were rubbing... and that may just be it.

But I also thought I'd ask if this is a precursor to the drive cable failing, or something else, that perhaps some preventive maintenance such as lubrication somewhere would be warranted to forestall some imminent failure??

Thoughts?

Happened in my S-Type; searched ages for the cause, and it disappeared when I replaced all of the fuses for another reason...

Yep, it comes and goes.... pretty rare so far, but it will do it a couple/three times in one day, then not do it again for months.

Maybe I just have to live with it until it reveals the root cause?
