Maybe some broken teeth on the gears? I was going to buy some lube today and lube up my sunroof area to keep everything good..

There is a procedure to time the motor assy with the sunroof- look to the archives or ask if you cannot find it. As sempire said, you probably have some teeth missing on the linear "rack" plastic gears. Rge pop up might be related, or be a result of a broken mechanism. There are many posts on this here and in the 98-2002 XJ8 forum (those cars use exactly the same sunroof).

Depending on how you view your car and how you use it, you might want to consider doig what I did on my XJ6- get the thing closed, then leave it alone! The sunroof is one of the mor tempermental parts of these cars.

Mine does the same thing. If you hold the button through the entire operation does it close?
