Default tail light problems

Ok. One of the first things i thought i better fix on my recently purchased jag are the tail lights. When i have all the lights turned off and i go to put in a new bulb in the bottom break light it lights up and stays light no matter if i turn the car off. I didnt notice at first and it drained my battery a couple times so i have to keep the bulb out. Does any one know why this is happening and how can i fix it?

Somebody in this section had that same problem not too long ago. Try the bulb from the other corner brake light in the socket, to make sure the socket is good. What you describe can happen if you are trying to use the wrong type of bulb. Compare the two. The bulb is a P21 or equivalent. It has two filaments, two contacts on the bottom, and two small tabs on opposite sides of the base, one close to the end, the other further up. Does your bulb look like that? It should fit without forcing.

Oh ok. I do remember there were two different bulbs. Ones with two contacts on the end like you described and ones with just one contact. I haven't had the chance to go try and work on it yet. Thanks for the help. I'll let you know how it goes

I went and bought all new bulbs. All the right sizes and that didn't help. I unplugged the whole assembly and inserted the bulbs in the correct places on both right and left hand tail light assemblies. When i plug the left one in(the car is completely turned off) the bottom left two bulbs light up. The P21 and the R5w. A friend told me it could be grounded some where. How do i check that? Thanks for your help
