Dos the TPS need to be calibrated/set up in any way if it is replaced, or is there any recommended approach to prevent any issues?

The ECM (Engine computer) adapts to the TPS as it wears out. The ECM would need to be forced to unlearn the adaptations using a Jaguar-specific tool. Most shops I know use software called IDS. This is a Jaguar-specifc version of IDS software which is different from Ford.

 

So, what you're saying is "yes" it would need to be set up/calibrated in some way, using Jaguar specific equipment/diagnostics. I can't therefore depend upon the ECU/ECM to "learn" that a new TPS has been installed and adapt to this over time?

I need to get this done to my car, too. The local Indy told me sometimes it will learn on its own, other times will need to be calibrated with specific tool. 50/50 is not good enough for me so I'll just have him do it, and be done with it. I just have to find one first lol.

 

If your old TPS wasn't too far out of spec, the ECM may work fine with a new one. Or it may not. There only way to tell is to replace TPS and see. But then, you may end up stuck with a car that idles at 3000 rpm.

If you decide to get adventurous, disconnect the battery and let the car sit for 5 minuter before TPS replacement.
