Default Turning off the magic

Hi Guys
I've nearly done the deal on buying a 1997 Jaguar xj6 Heritage 3.2 x300.
The car has a fault with the auto seat, mirror and steering column adjustment. The dealer I'm dealing with, is sorting the problem out, what I want to find out is, if the feature is restored to work on preset memory, does the auto/off knob on the column turn this feature off and can you then operate the seat and mirror manually with the control buttons. I can live without the car taking a bow every time I unlock it.
Thank you in advance. Chris

Not sure on the X300, as mine did not have it, the memory bit that is.

However, the 2 S Types have it, and YES, with the column knob in the OFF position the car bowing and scraping is gone, and YOU are once more in control.

Thanks very much Grant. I was hoping that would be the case.

MAAAAAATE.

Aussie for the bells and whistles, as in the seat going FULL back, and the steering going UP and IN to allow easier access, then returning to set position when the key is inserted in the hole.

Probably a bonus in the X300 with that huge sill hump to drag ones legs over, whereas the S has NO such sill hump, so for me it is easier to in and out than my X300, so the latter got sold.

Yeah my Range Rover doesn't bow or scrape either, but it will fetch a stick.

Turning of the magic-rover-rh-view.jpg

This Rover dont "bow and scrape" or "fetch" anything for anyone. YET. It does run, and move under its own steam. Very demanding, just like a Jag, so definately a female.

No sliding seat, or tilting steering column in this one.

Suicide doors, sweet as that is to some.

Best thing is there is NOT an ECU, control module, fuse, air bag, idiot light, relay, in sight, total bliss, even still +ve earth, whoopee.

Heh, gotcha

For the original poster, yeah if you turn off the "auto" switch on the steering column, the column and seat will stop retracting when the key is removed.

If your seat memory is not working, which is common, see the following thread for more info:

G'dayAl

Sounds like you are a old hand at bad tempered seat electrikary. It seems like a toss up between ringing an electrician or an exocist when it comes to x300 seat operation.
Thank you for your information / help/knowledge/experience and thank God the bloody things still function with the auto switch "off", cause that option is looking better by the minute.

Cheers ol mate....... Chris

G'day Grant

The Rover looks like a nice old jigger. Your car reminds me of a bloke who said to me that Pommie cars are like a kitcar in reverse, "you buy it in one piece and it will dismantle itself in time ". Keep up the good work.
I've got to say as someone who has only been here 5 minutes, I'm blown away with all the welcomes and friendly advise I've recieved.
All I have to do now is get the dealer to get his finger out and I can be a proud owner as well.
Cheers Chris

Well all my planning for my new XJ6 has gone up in smoke. The bloody dealer sold it to someone else. I had agreed to pay full price, agreed on trade in value and was waiting for a phone call to tell me they had replaced the battery and fixed the seat and it popped up on the Net "sold".

Used car sales people living up to their reputation as expected.

Sliding right in there with a snakes belly.

Kepp looking, they are out there.

Sorry to hear that, probably for the better if they were less than up front, the car may have also had other 'surprises'.

Just keep looking. The first few I was looking at either 'got away' or I ultimately passed on... and am very happy with the one I finally found over the subsequent months.

I don't want to assume the obvious....but did you call them? Maybe "sold" was based on the deal you made with them.

Hi JT
Rang them three times and went there twice. I even let them know where to pick up a cheap seat module if it was needed. I should have put down a small deposit. I also should have been born rich. It is a shame as it was a nice car, full service history and the colour combo I would have picked. I'd tip the other buyer was a cash deal without a trade in.

Hi Guys
Next silly question, and I think I know the answer ( depends on its service history).
There is a X300 series 1995 XJR WITH 217000 K's on it. What sort of life expectancy do these supercharged rocketships have kilometre wise in comparison to the standard injected 4.0 L

Based on the "obvious" you already know, the same life expectancy.

My son has a VX Calais s/charged, and at about 300K kms, still sweet as. It was an ex Company CEO car, and then that guys wife, then our son, and it was/is looked after, but certainly not pampered. Apart from a heater tap last month, nothing to speak of. Same family of s/charger as the AJ16. He replaced the s/charger belt as part of HIS post purchase "catch up" that we always do, and thats it.

Can you trust a CEO, back in 2000 my mate was CEO of his lawn mowing business and had a V8 Statesman with a 6 speed Holenger box. Nobody looked after that car including his mates! We thrashed it on the road and at track days...all a tax write off.
Can you trust a CEO? I don't trust the one where I work.

CEO just means you get paid more to be irresponsible.

Maybe.

He is 6 years into it now, so possibly it was not the "general drive car", as most can be.

Mine was a company exec car for years, then owned by a senior guy in another company.... was clearly pampered. So it just varies.

But I hear ya.... just like cautions against buying fleet/rental cars
