Default Welding.............

If I was to do some welding on my car, apart from the obvious safety issues, do I only need to disconnect the battery (both terminals) in order not to fry any electronic components? Are there any other considerations. PS. What needs to be welded can't be removed.

Thanks.

Removing the battery leads MIGHT have some advantage, but you will need to isolate the positive lead from ground to have ANY advantage!

What the real story is, you need to get the welder's ground tied to BOTH panels you are welding to prevent current flowing from a panel through the car's earthing system to find ground on another (grounded) panel.

I had intended disconnecting the battery and wrapping both terminals in plastic bags or similar, to keep them separated and isolated from any bodywork. I need to weld in a small patch in what seems to be a chassis rail and would ground the welder right beside this weld section. The welder ground is always best fixed as near to the weld as is possible anyway.

Would this suffice? Many thanks.

With all that was said on that Welder's post, you cannot repeal the laws of electrical engineering. There is NO, ZERO, NADA, ZILCH difference between removing one or both battery cables. Look up Kirchoff's voltage law!
