Wheels interchangeable?
 

Just picked up a 1996 XJ6 with 92K miles yesterday, BRG with biscuit interior, for $3400. Clearcoat is shot on the roof, and lots of crowfeet on the hood, but a very solid car otherwise.

Put new tires on it, 225/60-16, and was wondering about swapping the wheels with some other make. From what I can tell, my stock Jag wheels are 16x7, 5x120 bolt pattern? BMW e38 wheels have the same bolt pattern (5x120), but not sure if the offset and backspacing is compatible.

Does anyone know if the e38 mesh-style wheels will work?

Folks over at the Saab forum (I have a '91 900 turbo convertible) chimed in with some opinions. Seems that there actually is a difference between the 5x120 (BMW) and 5x120.65 (Jag) wheels. Apparently, 5x120.65 is the same as 5x4.75", which is a typical Chevy bolt pattern. Only variables now are the offset and backspacing...

....and center hole diameter. Jag hubs require a larger-than-typical center hole.

Good point, forgot about that one. Some Chevy trucks have the same bolt pattern as my '89 Montero, but the center hole is too small. Found that a lot of Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner wheels will bolt right up.

As for the Jag, I took the spare out (which is full-size, and looks like the rest of the wheels), and it's stamped with 16x7, 33mm (offset I'm assuming), and that's about it. So the bolt pattern is 5x120.65 (4.75"), and I measured the center hole as 73mm, backspacing as 5 7/8"?

Can anyone confirm the center hole opening and backspacing on these wheels?

If all 4 wheels looked alike, I wouldn't have an issue with them. But for some strange reason, one wheel looks new, but the other three have definitely been around the block a few times. Strange...

The wheels are kinda plain in my book, with a lot of aluminum there. Would like to get something where you can see what's behind 'em, and most XJ6 wheels that I've seen are more or less full face as well. I also have a '91 Saab turbo convertible, and swapped the stock 15-hole alloy wheels (which were a PITA to keep clean) with some later model "twisted" 3-spokes. I'm trying to stay away from multi-hole / multi-vaned wheels, which just traps brake dust and dirt, and take a while to clean.

If the Jag bolt pattern is the same as some Chevy models, wheels like the 5-spoke IROCs would look decent, easy to clean, and show the rotors and calipers.

This is my first Jag, and this one's a keeper, so we'll see if this is just a wheel phase I'm going thru, lol!

Dimple is such a good design.

The only Jaguar XJ/XK V8 wheels I know of that will fit the X300 are the X308 VDP with hub caps. The others will need to be modified in some way because of the front hubs.

FTR I have XJ8 wheels on my X300/XJR. Not sure what style they are....the plain-vanilla, standard issue 16x7 XJ8 wheel from 1998-2001 or whatever.

They fit fine *except* that they foul the wheel bearing dust caps on the front.

I had to ...ahem....cough cough ...."re-contour" the dust caps a bit :-)

Did you buy yours from a privit party or dealer?Looks like a clean car! I paid 2000 more and isnt as clean as yours on the inside (unless pics lie) and mine is the sc version......

Of course there are a few differences in X300 versus X308 lights and bumper trim...but they're very minor

Looked on Craig's List...found three being sold thru private parties, plus a couple from dealerships...two of the private party ones were the same color, the burgundy with tan interior...the two at dealerships were that light blue over tan...the one I ended up getting was the least expensive, and the only "local" one in BRG, and had the second lowest miles (a burgundy one I test drove had 87K, but the seller was firm at $4300).

I was thinking of getting a set of IROC wheels like these, 16x8, zero offset, center bore opening 73mm (s/b same as the Jag's):

I think the center area of each of those spokes would look good painted green, to match the car. Subtle, but would tie in the color of the car with the wheels. Main issue is the zero offset 8" width would push the wheels out, maybe to the point where they'd bottom out on the fender lip, instead of clearing it like they do now.

Lots of things to take into consideration on getting different wheels, and the main ones seem to be offset/backspacing, and more importantly, center bore diameter. Those dimple mags are just too plain for my liking, and they're so solid, can't see anything behind the wheels, like the brake calipers and rotors.

Since I plan on driving my '91 Saab 900 turbo convertible cross-country in Aug, I might just hold off on doing anything wheel-related, until the trip is done. But, if there's a smoking deal on a nice set of wheels, like those 5-spoke ones above w/o the tires, I might just have to take the plunge now and get the tires swapped later...

Panchostatus has that combo, maybe he can tell us.

I have seen the wheels installed WITHOUT the metal hub bearing caps but the grease might leak out!!!!

Maybe there is a different cap??????

Another option that I've heard should work are the 5x120 wheels that are common on BMWs. 'Course the BMW logos would be removed!

These wheels would work, since they're 16x7, +20mm offset, with a 74mm hub opening:

I'd prefer these wheels (16x7, +20), but the hub opening is just a pube too small, at 72.56 (I believe the stock Jag ones are 73mm):
