Drove my X300 XJ6 after many months of lockdown. On one trip the car wouldn't start. Needed to move gearstick around to get P to light up and then it was fine. What is the part I need to change that stops the P always lighting up?
Did you hear a solenoid relay and solenoid unlock as you moved the ignition key during the heat of battle ? This allows the gear selector to move around

Both the rotary switch ( below the floor pan ) and the linear switch item # 29 ( above the floor pan ) can be cleaned with a pencil eraser as they come apart and tinkered with , weak / fragile contact fingers that don't keep contact
There was a upgraded part # on the linear switch for whatever reason I think was fluid intrusion
Hi thanks sorry I only just checked for replies so apologies for the delay. When I press the brake I hear a loud click below shifter which I guess releases the lever. However the P sometimes glows red in which case it starts. No lit P and it won't start at all. Nothing. If I wiggle the shifter left to right the P lights up and off I go!
