Default 01 VDP Tires

Does anybody know what are the widest tires I could fit to my VDP without causeing any problems ? I should mention I still want to use the standard 16" rims.

Your limiting factor will be your rim size, which I guess is 16x7J.
I guess you might go up to 235, but the tires will even balloon more, and the diameter will grow if you don't change to a 55 profile (in which case it will reduce).
I went through the same thoughts, and concluded to change to wider (and larger) rims.
Alternatively, if u really like the VDP rims, you might consider to have them widened, I saw some samples of that on various forums.

I absolutely would not widen the stock approved rim. By doing so you are creating a hazard (unapproved methods), balancing issues, wheel centering and turning radius ability. No self respecting shop would allow you to do such a procedure.

Here's an article....http://tires.about.com/b/2011/07/14/...its-a-trap.htm

That article talks about widening wheels, not about wider tires on stock wheels..

If you look up your car here http://www.bigwheels.net/index.php you've got 3 choices that fit.

The stock 225/60R16, 235/60R16 or a 265/65R16.
The 235/60 will be approx 1/2" wider and 1/2" taller

Now that being said, the previous owner of my XJ sport put 245/45R18's on were the stock should be 255/40R18
These are approx .7" taller than the 255 and .6" narrower according to tire rack specs.
There are signs that they have been rubbing at the front fenders.

Absolutely correct convincor, I read into the initial question too far and went off in the wrong direction....my apologies.
So I hope this makes up for my ooboo....here's the link to the tire/rim matching calculator under tools in the task bar....https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/t...calculator.php

It is practically impossible to put a 265/65 tire on a 16x7J rim (VDP standard which OP wants to retain) without mayor deformation of the tire.
The rim is simply too small.
225/60 is in my opinion the only real consideration for his rims.

PS. I dont get ur point on the 245/45 tires.
I run 245/45R18 on 8" fronts and 275/40R18 on 9" rears (original Jaguar XKR rims / offset), and have no rubbing at all, just the rear bump stop needs to be modded if u go that wide.

typo on my part.
Should have been 225/65R16
A 265/65R16 would be 29.5"tall and 10.5 " wide.
So unless your planning a 6-8" lift they'll never fit the wheel well

When dealing with appropriate tires for a given rim size, tire manufacturers give the wheel width specs. General rule of thumb is the contact patch shouldn't be larger than the wheel width. You then have tire circumference (how many revolutions per mile) to deal with for speedo accuracy. Contact patch width in relationship to wheel width is important in the way the sidewall is loaded and performance in cornering. Fit the right wheel width to the tire, and wheel offset to the vehicle. In short, you don't use a tire with a 10" contact patch on a 7" width wheel.

+1.
Below is one of the many tables of tire width related to rim width.
Although subject to countless discussions, it gives some idea of 'what fits what'.

Just don't confuse tire width (section width) with contact patch (tread width) size. These are distinctly different. The above table is section width.
