Engine and trans in.

Two problems:

1. Wont start- am thinking CPS, turns over, and seems like it wants to start, but no go. Backfired once. I did check cam timing before installing and all was well.

2. transmission "creeps" when turning over- ??? any advice here would be great.

Thanks!

D

Any codes lights warnings?

Got fuel? everything's plugged in? a backfire would suggest timing - crank or cam sensor, have you used the originals?

Have you done a trans fill?

Thanks Sean- I have the old motor (which ran well, until..) so I will swap out the cam and crank sensors. Trans top up as soon as I get it started- stay tuned.

Ok- so here is what it was:

Engine- I replaced the CPS and Cam sensor, but in the end it turned out to be cylinder wash- I put oil in earlier, but not enough apparently.... Now I just need to run it though the smoke- (there is quite a bit)

Transmission- I had the radiator out and the lines plugged- this must have caused the creeping, because I put the radiator back in and the transmission is running like a champ now.

Good show D, test drove it yet?

No wonder it creeped, that's how to bust seals - pays to have EVERYTHING plumbed in before going for a start. The trans pumps need flow.

I did take it for a drive- runs and shifts perfect.

One issue- It is clean when it starts, idles and is driven calmly, but it is blowing oil smoke after I punch it- Am thinking part or full load breather issue.

Part load breather is clean and the full load isn't wet-

is it possible the oil I put in the cylinders (it was alot..) could be trapped in the exhaust? It is clean until I open up the throttle and it starts billowing (and then dissipates as I drive with low throttle/idle)

Also worth noting- it idles and runs very smooth- I would expect it to be rough if enough oil to make smoke in the exhaust entered the combustion chamber.

How long a drive have you had in it? if it's just a few round the block trips you could be right about oil kicking around in the front box - depends how much you used for a compression start.

Maybe a good long run, getting it up to temp and see if it fades, the cats take a while to get up to working temps anyway. If they're coated, you'll need to burn it off.

If it doesn't fade you'll need to look further, I'd hate to suggest valve stem oil seals at this point. How many miles on the engine?

I HOPE it's residual because it is a ridiculous amount of smoke..

Happy days. The smoke is diminishing the more I drive it and does not increase when full throttle/deceleration/initial start up so my conclusion is that the oil from my overzealous no-start cure needed to burn off and has done so.

It is running great (although noticeably slower than my XJR hehe) It still will chirp the tires so it is healthy.

All in:
Car- $1600
Towing- $200
Engine- $500
A-drum- $235

Hearing it run after all of that hard work- Priceless.

I think my time spent is about 25 hours over two weekends. I also used up a day driving to pick up the engine and A-drum which were about 150 miles apart.
