I have a 99 XJ8 82,000 miles that has been sitting in my garage for a couple of years. I got it running today and notice this knocking on the driver side. I attached a file of the knocking

Tensioners?? Have they been done?

 

Yes about ten years ago the tensioners and chains were replaced. The car has been sitting in the garage for most of the past four years.

 

Does it continue to knock once warmed up? It could be piston slap (rings not expanded from friction) if it is more pronounced when cold. I've never heard of bearings or pins deteriorating from sitting. I assume you checked the oil before starting.

 

Yes I checked the oil and coolant, no sign of water in the oil and the coolant level is ok. I notice a coolant smell while the car was running I let the car run for about 25 minutes and the sound didn't go away. I may take it for a ride around the neighborhood, I'm a little hesitant because the registration is not valid. Also the dash is lit up like Christmas so I will see what codes I can pull..
