I received a new set of piston rings designated for the 1999 XJR 4.0.
Everything seems ok, the old rings and the new rings all measure same thickness etc.
What I did notice is the old middle ring has a step on the bottom outside edge making the ring thinner at the outside edge.. The new middle rings do not have this step. The provider swears they are for the supercharged application...
Has this been seen this before with replacement XJR rings?
Thanks
RJ
Not sure about the rings, but be careful as AJ26 (98-99) and AJ27 2000+ v8's may have different rings. AJ26 needs rings suited for nikasil bores. On the jag/rover heritage website, PN's look like JLM20929 (AJ26) and JLM21635 (AJ27), but verify.

I would be concerned as the outside diameter looks a bit larger
on the new part. (Perhaps by design?)
I'm trying to find out if the 1999 ring is made thinner at the cylinder wall to preserve Nikasil, and the new ring is for steel cylinders. Because apart from that, they're identical.
Just an idea… maybe reach out to a trusted local machine shop? If I were you, I’d show up and ask a seasoned machinist what their opinions are in regards to the ring differences. It would be a real shame if you just went ahead with the build and some sort of catastrophic failure occurred. Proceed with caution.
