Default 2000 VDP-SC Throttle Body Recall Info

I noticed in the forum threads there was a recall on the 1999 throttle body.

Coincidentally, last week the Jag Dealer just charged me $2500 for a new throttle body for my 2000 VDP-SC following an engine fair-safe error.

The dealer said the sensor was not a serviceable part and that the entire throttle body needed replacing.

I'm wondering if there is any information on recalls for the 2000 VDP-SC that I might have missed and where I might find them.

Thanks,
Terri

It's a well known issue that's been covered plenty of times before.
I have the same problem, and am about to get a rebuilt throttle body installed, I went through Automotive Scientific Inc. Your #1 Source for ECU, TCU, ABS, EBCM, Climate Control and Speedometer Repairs for mine. They offer a rebuild service, so you can either get your original rebuilt, or buy a rebuilt unit and then get a core charge refunded after you send your old one back to them.

Sounds like you could've saved yourself a grand or so if you'd come here first...

I would say that taking a car this age to the dealer for service shows an awful lot of respect for the car! Far more (respect) than I can imagine it is worth. The main problem with a dealer, I am afraid, is that they are obligated to use Jaguar brand parts, which are punitively priced.

Rosenthall?? What a surprise. There used to be a specialty shop that just works on Jags behind the Volvo dealer in Falls Church. Great folks (or were twelve years ago). ASI would have cost you ~$400 plus labor to remove, ship and reinstall. If you have not had the tensioners done, get them done, but not by the dealer unless you love giving money away . . .

Why does your website list the TB for $1,400 + ?

That's exactly what I was thinking!
If I recall correctly, the TB for the AJ26's can be found all over the place, but the AJ27 ones are either very expensive, or almost impossible to find

Well, I still fail to see a throttle body listed for a SC model as needed by the OP. Are you suggesting that they are the same?

Would be very interested in knowing whether it is the same part for the sc model, although I'm fairly certain it is. The only difference should be between the AJ26 and AJ27 versions.

FYI I had my ASI rebuilt, Maxbore modified unit installed today. And its #$@#ed. Goes straight into failsafe mode, so I'm guessing either ASI didnt rebuild it as well as I was hoping, or maxbore have somehow messed with something, or my local dealership haven't installed and callibrated it properly. And to make matters worse, I cant just send it back to ASI because the work maxbore did voids the warranty.

I'll get the old throttle body put back on, as at least that worked MOST of the time, and send the new one back to ASI and hope they'll come to the party and check it over for less than the cost of a full rebuild

Last year, when I bought a brand new AJ26 TB for Maxboring, I got problems when installed it to the car. Engine stalled and went to failsafe all the time. Change to stock TB resolved the problems immediately. The second one got same problems, but after some changes between stock and bored one, the bigger one finally started to work without problem and without re-calibration of the TPS. You may try to turn the TPS a bit to find the right calibration for new butterfly or reload the ECU software, which includes TPS calibration.

I've sent you a PM requesting your VIN number, that way we can be sure we are talking about the same unit.

Yeah, I got it. Do you really want VIN, rather than engine number?? Can you help us understand how many different part numbers there are and do you have AJ 26 and AJ 27 units? The masses may want to know!

Both VIN & Engine will be better!

Once I have your details I'll post up the differences for each. Trouble is I need the VIN to be sure, and to prevent a foot in the mouth! I'm currently in the process of listing all the throttle bodies into an easy to view spreadsheet. We have a lot of these OEM units for all models available at varying reasonable prices, which I'm sure the members would be interested in.

Careful, Ross. Don't be so hard on us! You may pay me a bit of a premium at times, but I go out of my way to make it worth it. I'll also work with anyone on using decent quality aftermarket parts.

The difference in the throttle bodies on the AJ27's is that the NA engines have the Air Assist Injection. That means there is an Air Assist valve on the back of the TB housing. The SC engines do not have Air Assist Injection. They have a blanking plate with a coolant hose nipple on it instead of the valve. Other than that, they are basically the same.

I've bitched for years that the Jag parts catalog AND aftermarket parts folks seem to have trouble figuring out that fact.

I'm here to help, don't make people afraid of me!

Cheers,

Thanks for the info Steve!

The later NA & SC air assisted engine throttle bodies are the expensive ones at $2200 plus (C2A1444) (C2A1445) if I'm not mistaken? The earlier NA & SC version (C2A1470) we carry OEM in stock for a much lower price. Never the less it's always best to call us or you preferred supplier with your VIN number.

Steve:
Point made and taken! I will say the dealer is likely to see my XF-R for quite a while. I don't believe the average dealer's service department will have anything to do with parts furnished by others, but I honestly have never asked. And I don't challenge the "fairness" of the dealer parts or labor prices, but I think you would admit the $1,500. TBS price tag, plus labor is a little much for a car worth about twice that. I fully appreciate the cost of stocking parts, training, maintaining the tools and test equipment and so on, but most of what the average X-308 needs can be done by a lesser provider. As I said, I will not even work on the new car myself at this point!

And for the record, I am appreciative and in your debt for the contributions you make here without any compensation except an occasional thank you. THANK YOU! I know I have learned a lot from your posts.

Just going back to this... does anyone have any more specific information about installing and calibrating the throttle body? I have a feeling the local dealer is being difficult because I supplied the part myself, and it is modified. I guess I can see their point... but you'd think that they'd have to go through the proper calibration process no matter where the replacement unit came from.

Basically, if they'd sourced a new TB for me, it still wouldn't be a straight plug and play job, so surely this one can't be any more difficult?

Currently the car is undriveable, it is constantly in failsafe mode. To me this would seem to indicate a calibration issue, rather than a faulty part.
It is booked back with the local dealer to get the old (faulty) TB put back in tomorrow, because at least that was only faulting intermittently.

Then I need to work out whether the new unit is actually faulty, or if it just needs to be set up properly... and then whether I should take it to someone else to get it put in instead?
There is an independent Jaguar specialist in town, but I have always preferred going to the proper dealer. They have usually looked after me in the past, plus the best technicians, but apparently they aren't always willing to look outside the box when it comes to finding solutions to things.

There is no calibration or setup, per se, to a throttle body on your model. During the swap, the battery needs to be disconnected so when it is reconnected and keyed on, the throttle initialization takes place. Other than proper throttle cable adjustment, there is nothing else to worry about. If your 'replacement' throttle body always goes into default, there is probably a fault with it.

Good luck!
