2001 XJ not starting
I drive this car every day. Today Went to start it but it will not start, it turns over fine. No other running issues, although it has taken a second or 2 of turning over to get started lately. I am assuming it could be a multitude of issues, fuel pump, electronics, computer etc. but does anyone have anything I can try first before I take it to the shop.
You can check for fuel at the fuel rail. There is a schrader valve on the fuel rail. Take a rag and push the pin in the middle and see if fuel squirts out - after turning the key on. Spark, you can pull a plug and sit it on some metal, crank, and see what you get. It should be blue. These are the real basics. Not sure how willing you are to dig further. I guess you have no check engine light ? If you have a code reader there could be pending codes even though you don't have a check engine light on. Could be cylinder wash, maybe, but I thought that was fixed by 2001.
More details please:
Mileage
How long have you owned it
Have the tensioners been replaced
Was the engine making any noises in the weeks running up to this
Is the battery fresh
Does it make any indication that it is catching, or does it just crank and not fire

If I had to hazard a guess I would say you put about 40-45K on the car in three years- am I close? More than likely tensioners may have not been done before 80K so....remove the valve covers and check to see if the tensioners have been switched over to the metal ones. Let us know what you find.
