Default 2002 VDP, just checking that VDP and XJR rear ends are the same??

I just bought a new "pretty kitty" a light blue zircon over ivory (I've been wanting this color combo for years:0)

It has a bad leak from the rear end pinion and I've found a good replacement with low miles from a 2002 XJR

I just wanted to check with those of you who know if the rear ends are the same or different. It is my ever so uneducated opinion that they are the same.

Thank you in advance

Who are you kidding WD, you've been under the hood of these girls too much and now you've found another one....tsk, tsk....lol

I would contact Count Iblis about that, he's engineered them with upgrades to know...but I'm fairly sure its a 14HU.

Here's a rebuild thread, especially read Post #14 about gear ratios in case they may be (but doubtfully) be different and Post #18.... https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-thread-68571/

I'm still on the lookout for an 02-03 Super V8 in some color other than grey
I have a blue zircon over oatmeal xj8, and have been looking for one for quite some time with ivory interior.

The VDP I just bought is a creampuff with only 47K miles. I'm just swapping to penta wheels and leaving it stock. I just love these cars :0)

In my experience with pinion leaks on these cars, the leak occurs between the splines of the pinion. The pinion metal is softer than the snub (or stub) that bolts on the front of the pinion. The softer metal teeth wear out and the oil travels thru the worn splines and gets slung all over. What I do to repair these when customers with excessive diff leaks is pull the stub out, clean the oil off the internal splines of the stub and external splines of the pinion, throughly dry off all the splines, apply a conservative amount of rtv on the front of the pinion splines just past the threads where the nut goes on it. The idea is that once the stub slides over the pinion, the rtv travels the splines and seals the teeth from oil. It’s worked on several customers cars, and both of my X308’s. My 259K mile XJR is still dry after about 30K miles of me having done it. It’s certainly easier and much cheaper than changing out a diff.
just my 2 cents worth.
Cheers

Just a FYI for anyone who wants to swap out the pumpkin,

I just found out that the xkr dif I bought has 4 bolts on the yolk to mate to the driveshaft, where the xj8/VDP diffs have only 3 bolts.

I drove down to see the fine fellows at Jaguar Heaven and bought a nice used '01 xj8 rear end instead to swap in since my car was now stranded on a lift, and I didn't want to make the mechanics have to wait for me to source another one which would take time.

The guys at Jaguar Heaven are A+ to deal with in my experience here today. :0)
