When manucturer does a suspension set up for each model, one of key factors are the tires. The XjR suspension is set up at the factory using particular tire size, tread wear, and speed rating. Using anything other then what's specified will alter ride and handling.

Performance tires usually will have a lower tread wear as opposed to a more "pedestrian" tire. The performance tires' objective is grip and it achieves that in part through softer compound, lower sidewall, etc.

If I have to worry about putting on "more sensible" tires on my XJR, then I should also disconnect several spark plug wires for a "more sensible" mileage ))))

Hi. I actually work as a mechanic at a tire shop and am really impressed by Hankook tires for quality and price. I've been dying to put a set of Hankook Ventus V2 Concept's on a car for myself, but have not yet had the chance since they don't make them in a 60% sidewall. I would go with a nice set of V2's if I were you, but I like to drive in rain, heavy snow, hot heat, and have a soft spot for cornering so these may not be what you're looking for. Good luck, let us know...

Michelin Pilot Sport All Season. The temperature range is greater and lasts longer and still has the required speed rating.

Obviously correct!

The designers select tires, springs, shocks, anti-roll bars, etc. to arrive at a compromise they are happy with and suits their needs.

However, as owners, we're not bound by the same shackles the factory guys were and we're free to come up with compromises that WE are happy with and suit OUR needs.

Since tire technology and design is always changing it's quite possible to improve on what the factory used...as we have choices that probably didn't exist 10-15 years ago.

Right!

Heh heh, we all "worry" about different things :-)

In my case, spending $600-$800 every 11 months for new tires caused me to "worry" about how much money was going down the drain !

Cheers

I have kuhmo le on my xjr. Lasted about 10k so far but I'd expect 15k to the wear indicators 280 treadwear.

Great dry grip, good wet grip but in heavy rains you do need to slow down below 80mph as they don't dispurse water real good above that quieter than the contis that they replaced, nice ride quality. Summer only tire btw. My inspection is up in august so I'm debating on ordering another set ow or just putting other tires on it for inspection then replacing in the spring when the winter tires come off. Currently there is a $50 rebate on 4 so you're all mounted and balanced for well under $700ish.

$135 per for Michelin Pilots on Tire Rack -- why anything else? Had Pirelli 6ks on my first XJ8, lasted 8k:,switched to Pilots, looked new 25k later when I traded for a Land Rover.

Wife has the Yokohamas on her Nissan POS, 50k miles with hardly any wear. Tire Rack customers rate these second to the Pilots.

From my iPad: spelling, punctuation, capitalization errors are Siri's fault.

Default Re Tires

On my 2001 XJR i run Goodyear Eagles 255/45ZR 18's Good looking tread pattern ideal for wet roads.
Had a problem with front tires {scalloped} and Goodyear was great in allowing me a 50% credit for replacements through Discount Tire.
Regarding Discount Tire here in Arlington Texas they give excellent service cleaning the hubs to remove rust etc when they rotate the tires.

How interesting- just rechecked the web site from my end- they are priced $110 more for 245/40/18's - although the rebate is listed as well, decreasing the price by ~$20 per. hmmm....

Hi,

After much consideration and talk with a true 'tire guy' I went with Nitto Motivos to replace my Contis. I have the same year XJR and these tires have been night and day in terms of ride comfort without sacrificing to much performance.

They have a great mileage life (I believe my tire guy said 60k), although he did recommend rotating every 3k because these cats are heavy.

Cost for tires, mount, and balance was right around $900 if I remember correctly.

I am running 255/40/ZR18s. I'm sure why they wouldn't have them. My tire shop didn't mention any issues in getting them.

Good luck with 'em. I know I wouldn't want anything for a performance car that got 60k treadwear as that simply means they're not the softest of compounds out there but to each his own. Then again, I'm perfectly content replacing the Kuhmo XS on my TVR ever 8-10k as they pull a g in the corners.

While a great fan of Michelin tyres,on my Saab, I use Continentals on my 308 XJR and get very good life, about 55k from each set of 235 50 R 17 Y. In the UK my quote from Black Circles at £115 v £133 for Michelin, a saving of £18 x 4, £72, (about $100).

While it may be a performance car, she is a slow coach (at the time the fastest saloon car with the BMW M5 in 1999) at 0-60 in 4.2 secs. My Tesla model S makes that look slow, (the plaid does it in under 2 secs!), mine, an early model does it in about 3.7secs! I use Goodyear Eagle tyres on that!
Ireckon having raced on teh Bonneville salts flats at over 150MPH, my elderly lady deserves a quite semi retirement, doing under 500 miles a year, as a spare car!
