Default 98 Vanden Plas Sun Roof

When I purchased the car I was told that the sun roof did not operate. As I have been going through fixing things I found that the motor was not plugged in. Upon plugging it in the motor turns but the roof does not open but I can manually crank the roof open. The motor seems to have a mind of its own as it cycles itself to open. I am almost positive that I need a new motor but do not want to buy it if it is possibly something else. Any suggestions?

David:
Here's a link to a good thread about the sunroof in which Bob G. posted pretty much everything you need to know. It will take a bit of study, though. I know that from personal experience. My hunch is that the two cables have probably come out of alignment. If it's as simple as that, it's an easy fix.

I too have sunroof problems. Won't open properly and seems the guides might be broken. The drumming/thumping sound while driving, was driving me crazy. My remedy was to apply silicone around the roof opening, just the front required it to stop the noise. I will have to remove the silicone this spring and tear into the sunroof issue. I will be waiting for TheHilts to report back with solution, perhaps I can learn from it.

Mine is messed up to. It used to work fine until I had some body work done and the panel was remove. Awesome!!

Anyway, the driver side track is broke and that put extra pressure on the pax side when used, which caused bending. The driver side would flop up and down on the highway, and the motor would do whatever it felt like when i touched the switch. It was recommended to buy a used sunroof assembly to replace. My car is black, but shouldn't matter. Ordered the part from a salvage place in texas who said it worked fine. A little skeptical. We'll see. Looks like it could be a little out of alignment. Hope not, I'm sick of dealing with it.

Here's the used one from the salvage yard:

I was checking over the sunroof after my last post and notice the bent line. It must have been damaged in shipping or packaging. Anyone have any luck with bending them back into place? Sucks. Thanks UPS.

After reading the TSB's on the link that Scott posted I found that the sunroof gears just weren't engaged. That little quarter turn after manually opening the roof solved the problem. Good to be able to open it and enjoy. Thanks again.
