Default can I replace a 99 XJ8 trans with another one from a 98 XK?

hi there

my transmission went out. 99 xj8 vanden plas aspirated engine.

always stays in 5th gear :-(

so I found a great deal on ebay on a 98 xk trans, looks same on the outside, both 5HP24.

would it be a great idea to buy it and swap it or am I going to have trouble / mismatch?

thanks!

Should be a direct swap and I hate to bring it up but the 5th gear situation could be the result of a solenoid valve in the pan of the transmission under control of the Transmission Control Module. Do you have a CEL and if so what are the codes?

Sorry you had to have such problems to find this forum.

I am assuming it is more than solenoid because when kicking into gear I hear some horrible metallic sounds inside, those would be absent unless something bad

Now, I know from my experience with VW that these transmissions 5HPxx used to have until about year 99 an inductive sensor for the input speed and then they moved to Hall effect sensor. So I was trying to see if the same goes for the transmissions built for Jaguar: any change on the electric side over the years.

Cheers!

If you would download the JTIS from the sticky above it has the electrical schematics for every year. Otherwise I would go searching for the part on SNG Barrett's web site and see if the part numbers changed from one year to the next.
