Car phone antenna
Hi. I have a 2001 XJR, which came with the original carphone (rare, I know!). I put a SIM in it, and initially phoned the cellular service provider (Vodafone in the UK), and got it registered and added £10 credit. However, it doesn't let me make any calls. I phoned the service provider and they did various checks and confirmed that there was no problem there end.
I'm guessing now it is the antenna for the phone, since there are 5 signal strength bars on the phone, and I never get any of them lit (see out of focus pic!).

Can anyone tell me where the antenna is? There are no antenna sticking up at the back of the car. On the back window there's something that says "High Security Antenna":

On the inside behind the blacked out section at the top of the window there's a little plastic tab too. I don't know what that does (sorry for the pic quality - contrast was tricky to achieve against the sunlight):
. Is this something to do with the antenna.
Any help would be very gratefully received. Thanks everyone.

Hi Paul,
I had the same phone in my XK8. They don't seem to like pay as you go sims, try a contract sim instead. That said, once I proved that mine worked I disconnected it as I never used it.
O2's are usually quite good.
Highly unlikely it is the aerial as you have already made a call. However that is the aerial at the top of the screen. Connections from there go to the centre arm rest under the cubby box.
Hope this helps,

Thanks Jimbo. I'll try a contract SIM and see if that works.
The reason I thought it may be the antenna is that I never get any of the signal strength bars lit (except during the display test when it powers on). I thought the original call which did work may have been at a location where there was a particularly strong mobile signal.
Does anyone know the route that the antenna wiring takes from the centre console to the top of the back window? It would be useful to know before pulling all the panelling off!
