Differential output bearing question

Default Differential output bearing question

Hi,
I have a question about my differential.

I'm replacing the output shaft bearing on a 1999 XJ8 VDP and just outboard of the bearing is a castellated ring. Can someone please tell me its purpose?

Can it be omitted when I reassemble the diff.? Thanks

I've had a look at the parts catalog and the only piece that sounds like yours is quite large.
I've never had the diff apart, but no, you can never omit parts. Why do you want to?

The part is $550 at the Jaguar dealer, both of mine are leaking and to my knowledge there is not an alt available part. The axle seal bearing, if omitted, would destroy the differential...

How bad is the leak?
Or is it just sweating?
Mine has a very tiny leak...not so much a leak really as a sweaty smear around the right hand side of the diff casing.
I had the oil changed and a tube of Nulon Diff additive which has almost completely stopped the wetness....I am leaving well alone at this stage ;o]

The output shafts and bearings are held in place with snap rings. The 'castellated' part you see is screwed in or out to set the carrier bearing preload and crownwheel-to-pinion depth.

The older diffs are set up with shims.

My son removed the bearing for me and we saw the purpose of the castellated nut. Thanks for your input.
