Ceramic coated my XJ8 on Thursday and while going over the body saw this:
The car was only resprayed completely in March 2019, so a bit disappointed. I went back to the sprayer who wants £550 to cut out rust and re-plate it. Not sure what to do? Thought it would be cheaper to sand it down, treat with rust prevention and fill it. Would welcome forum members comments please.
For a permanent repair cutting and replacing is the best way. Considering your location I expect the rust is from the inside, so grinding the inside and outside surfaces, treating rust, then coating inside surface with epoxy and painting outside would likely hold up much better than just doing the outside.
DougXK8 I have to ask. Are those redline tires on your XJ? If so, could you post a picture so I could see it a little better? I was toying with the idea of putting them on my car. Thanks! Kip
These tyres are 225/60/R16 Accelera Ecoplush XL tyres. I purchased them here in the UK for £194 including valves & wheel balance back in February 2019.
They are terrific. Not your well know name but just as good without the big brand overheads!!!
Thanks for the link! Might be a better option than the redline tires which are really expensive and these would serve an added purpose of protecting the rim. I had never heard of them before. Sorry for hijacking your thread. Lol
Whenever the paint bubbles like that its because the rust has penetrated the metal from the back side. Water didn't go through the paint and do that, it came from underneath. And usually when you see a rust bubble on the surface, its just the proverbial "tip" of the iceberg. The solution is of course to move here to Texas where its relatively dry.
Thanks Phil, will need to see if I can get it checked out by another paint shop. Also, would love to move to Texas but it will cost me more than the repair of my XJ8!
